MoveOn's Top Priorities for 2009

#3MoveOn members talk about why they chose "Build a green economy, stop climate change" for 2009:

“There are estimates out there that suggest 2 million American jobs could be lost by the end of this year. This is a very real possibility. Where will people turn when they have no job, no money, no opportunity? We have to save this country; get it back on track. One of the ways to do that is to create a strong economy based on "green jobs." This not only helps all Americans, but our planet as well.”—Cher H., San Antonio, TX

“I'm writing this email with power from a generator, after losing electricity 6 days ago in the powerful ice storm that affected the Northeast. I may not get power back until Friday, which will be a full 7 days without electricity or running water. I'm lucky to have a generator, and luckier still that Internet service was restored yesterday. This is the third consecutive year that I find myself in a declared disaster area (the two previous years saw back-to-back 100 year flood events). It's very likely that climate change has a hand in the extreme weather that NH has been experiencing in the last 5 years. Floods, tornadoes, massive amounts of snow, and now a record-setting ice storm that knocked over half the state off the grid. It's time that we did something meaningful about global warming.”—David W., Barrington, NH

“Our country needs to not only catch up on green technology, but to put our incredible technical and manufacturing abilities to work to become the leader in renewable energies and environmentally sound methods of manufacturing and transportation. We have a planet to save and jobs to create! Let's get to work!”—Greg J., Englewood, CO

“If we keep burning fossil fuels, our planet may not be livable in years to come. In my opinion, this is by far the most important task ahead of us.”—Marilyn L., Ahwhanee, CA
