MoveOn's Top Priorities for 2009

#2MoveOn members talk about why they chose "Economic recovery and job creation" for 2009:

“I am 59 years old with a depleted 401K and working for a Fortune 500 company. I am struggling with my home heating bill and keeping up my mortgage payments. With all the bailouts, none of which has hit the dwindling middle class, I am hoping when President-elect Obama gets into office ordinary folks will see some relief ASAP. We need help NOW.”—Sandra A., Cleveland, OH

“10 1/2 years of hard work, dedication and loyalty to a financial services company came to an end on December 9th when I was laid off because of the economy. While I'm lucky to have a three month severance package, how am I possibly going to support my family when those checks stop coming? Unemployment benefits will not be enough to cover my mortgage payments, health care expenses etc. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be one of the 2 million unemployed. I'm terrified of what's to come.”—Nancy H., Monmouth, NJ

“We closed our business in 2007. My husband thank God has a very marketable skill, but I have been unemployed for over seven months. We are just a breath away from losing everything. We have had bad years before but never devastating ones like this one. We are not alone. Our children are struggling to survive as young parents, our neighbors are like usmore ready for retirement but being forced to return to the work force. One of my children just became eligible for food stamps and the allotted amount is still short of what they need. If there is a need in America, it is to let good people go back to earning a decent wage and open this economy back to the real people who built this country on their sweat and equity.”—Ruth D., Ocoee, FL

“The accomplishment of every other goal in some way depends on the resolution of our economic crisis.”—William D., Aliso Viejo, CA
